Call for Papers: E. M. Forster: Nature, Culture, Queer!

13 – 14 April 2018 University of Education Ludwigsburg University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn University of Warsaw International E. M. Forster Society   Hosted by the University of Education Ludwigsburg, Germany   The œuvre of E. M. Forster is undoubtedly based on contrast: nature vs. culture, nature vs. queer, and/or culture vs. queer. However, there seems to be many instances when the oppositions dissolve in the triad of nature, culture and queerness. Nature sometimes functions as a connection between culture and life, and the life tends to be quite specific, queer. Sometimes still it is queerness (of the sex or of the mind) that links nature with culture. In turn, culture may be responsible for bringing nature and queerness together. The proposed conference shall shed more light on the relation of the triad nature, culture, and queerness in relation to the life andCzytaj dalej

17–18 November 2017 Download call for papers In English: CONRAD_CALL_ENG In Polish: CONRAD_CALL_FINAL_PL   University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn University of Warsaw Patronage: The Polish Joseph Conrad Society Summarising his reflections concerning Conrad’s service at sea, Zdzisław Najder wrote that in this 20-year-long period he “gained an immense range of experience, from stark, helpless fear, disgust, and boredom to the ecstatic enjoyment of beauty, a sense of the triumphant efficacy of his own body and spirit, to exhaustion relieved by the consciousness of victory in the struggle against an incomparably stronger elemental opponent”. This incredibly vivid memory of serving at sea acquired a characteristic, almost elegiac overtone in Conrad’s works, which was also audible in The Mirror of the Sea: “when the great soul of the world turned over with a heavy sigh […] The machinery must do its work even if theCzytaj dalej

Common Room: From WORDS to WORLDS

Płock, 20-21.10.2017   The name of the annual Common Room conferences organised by the State University of Applied Sciences in Płock refers to the literary salon held in London by Stefan and Franciszka Themerson, an extraordinary couple of Polish-born artists and intellectuals, during the years 1957-1959. It hosted numerous scientists, academics, artists and literary figures and was the site of unique lectures, presentations, artistic evenings, concerts and discussions. It is the intention of the organizer to recreate the truly interdisciplinary spirit of what the Themersons defined as a “friendly meeting place and a forum for the exchange of ideas.”   Download CFP in Polish: CommonRoom2017CFPpolski Download CfP in English: Common Room2017CFPEnglish This year’s fifth edition of the Common Room conference is devoted to WORDS that can be perceived as both seductively fascinating and overly threatening. Call for Papers “Experiment in Drama, Theatre, Film and Media”

Department of Studies in Drama and Pre-1800 English Literature “Experiment in Drama, Theatre, Film and Media” International Conference   University of Lodz 27-28 Oct 2017   The conference poses the question about the value and outcome of experiment in literary, theatrical, dramatic and cinematographic representations. Centuries of experiments in these disciplines culminated in the 20th century, with the rise of a number of alternatives to traditional modes of expression: realism and naturalism gave way to symbolism, Epic Theatre, Theatre of Cruelty, Theatre of the Absurd, Third Theatre, in-yer-face theatre, immersive theatre and other avant-garde movements. Most of these movements in the course of time have been accommodated into the mainstream or eventually institutionalised. Many experiments have also been stimulated by political conviction or produced, in their turn, a certain policy in the given area of the arts, creating an intersection between aesthetics and social concerns.Czytaj dalej

Food and Drink Call for Papers

Department of History and Material Culture of English Speaking Countries Pedagogical University of Krakow, Poland Call for Papers 2nd International Conference Food and Drink as Symbols: historical perspectives 27-28 October 2017 – Krakow Eating and drinking have always been a part of socialisation. Humans have eaten together and mealtimes are events when the whole family or community comes together. Eating food can also be an occasion for sharing, for giving to others, for example, parents give food to their children, a mother gives her milk to her infant, thus making food a symbol of love and security. Two thousand years ago Jesus taught us to share food with others. He used food for both instruction and revelation, and food items bear a religious symbolism in the way they are made or the way they are eaten. For instance, in Christianity bread and wine have aCzytaj dalej

The acquisition of intercultural communicative competence becomes a key professional skill and a primary success factor for university educators, graduates, and researchers in the field, as well as business professionals, international employers, or HR specialists.   Addressing these concerns, the ICCAGE conference will contribute to the on-going debate on intercultural language/communicative skills, and various innovative teaching and training approaches to ICC including global mobility, intercultural mediation and telecollaboration, and in and out-of classroom methodologies.   The conference will offerCzytaj dalej

Call for Papers Shakespeare

Shakespeare and European Theatrical Cultures: AnAtomizing Text and Stage 27 – 30 July 2017 at the University of Gdańsk and The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, Poland http://esra2017.eu This conference will convene Shakespeare scholars at a theatre that proudly stands in the place where English players regularly performed 400 years ago. This makes us ponder with renewed interest the relation between theatre and Shakespeare. The urge to do so may sound like a commonplace, but it comes to us enhanced by the fact that in the popular and learned imagination alike Shakespeare is inseparable from theatre while the theatre, for four centuries now, first in England, then on the continent (Europe) and eventually in the world, has been more and more strongly defined and shaped by Shakespeare. Shakespeare has become the theatrical icon, a constant point of reference, the litmus paper for the formal, technological and ideological development ofCzytaj dalej
